Empowering Survivors
Individual Counseling Empowerment/Strengths-based counseling recognizes the survivor's strength and resiliency and works to build new coping skill around existing strengths. VSC counselors consider the survivor the expert on his or her own experience, and we support the survivor in determining what is most helpful in their own unique healing. Therefore, when providing counseling, counselors maximize the client's control in the decision-making process. When we assist clients in problem solving, we provide information and help weigh the pros and cons of each choice without judgment. We focus on strength and offer support, believing in the power and ability of every person to heal from trauma. The safety and well-being of our clients is our utmost priority in all of our interactions with them. Crisis Counseling Many people who have been impacted by violence experience anxiety, fear, confusion and anger. A crisis occurs when people no longer feel able to cope in the ways they could have previously. Through crisis counseling, we provide support and information to adults, children and families who are in a crisis as a result of victimization. The goal of crisis counseling is to provide information and support and to assist clients in stabilizing functioning in several key areas impacted by the trauma (such as work and social relationships). Through this process, clients learn to reduce their anxiety, build and mobilize their personal support networks as well as how to access appropriate community resources. Supportive Counseling Once the crisis has subsided; people find they have been impacted by victimization in many different ways. Some people feel very angry, some feel powerless, and some blame themselves for the actions of others. Through supportive counseling, clients learn new skills for coping with stressors in their lives and reducing the risk of future re-victimization. Clients have increased confidence in their decision-making ability and in their ability to have a positive influence in life events. Informational Sessions With information, children and adults gain skills and awareness that enhances their ability to be safe, supported and to heal. Survivors of violence, as well as the partners and caretakers of those who are victimized, gain information to help them cope with the impact of crime in their lives. Child Sexual Abuse Treatment Program "We feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to have our child in this program - it has helped us learn how to support our child and feel stronger as a family." - Caregiver of a child in the Child Sexual Abuse Treatment Program
This program provides free, long-term therapy to abused children who may not otherwise have the opportunity to process their trauma in a professional, therapeutic environment. The staff also works with the caregivers of these children, involving them in their child's healing.
