Promoting Awareness and Sensitivity
How Can Education Help? The Victim Services Center believes that education and awareness are the first steps toward prevention of child abuse, sexual assault and sexual harassment. By educating both children and adults, VSC strives to create a safe society free from violence. Thus, we use the three pronged approach, including students, parents, and professionals working with children. Through our educational programs, students become aware of the issues facing them and what they can do to protect themselves, professionals become comfortable with their role in the process, and parents become confident in communication about these issues with their children. By increasing awareness and communication, our educational programs can help to reduce the risk of crime in your school and your community. Shown below are some VSC safety education programs offered for students (pre-k to college), parents, and professionals. Preschool/Elementary School Keeping Touches Safe & Healthy
Age appropriate interactive program using either a book (Pre-K), puppet show (K), or video (1st - 5th) teaches children how to recognize safe versus unsafe touches and skills to help prevent sexual abuse. Support systems are identified and communication with adults is encouraged.
"I highly recommend this presentation to elementary classes and it should be repeated every year! The message should be heard several times as the children mature and interact with new people... I think that this is so valuable and helps to keep our children safe!" - 3rd grade teacher from Bridgeport Elementary Middle School/Junior High
*Putting A Stop To Sexual Assault/Sexual Harassment:
Interactive program using video and role-plays allows students to practice skills in handling sexually abusive and harassing situations. Encourages students to trust their feelings, talk to an adult, and act assertively when their rights are being ignored. This program teaches students to identify appropriate and inappropriate touches as well, as to distinguish between flirting and harassing. *Sexual Harassment A more in-depth interactive program using video teaches students how to identify and handle sexual harassment. Emphasis is placed on the rights of students and their ability to assert themselves. "Glad you focus on the problems they see. I think harassment happens a lot and kids don't realize it." - Teacher from Perkiomen Valley Middle School High School "I liked the presentation, especially because we were involved in it. It wasn't just a lecture, which is good, because a lot of times people don't pay attention to lectures. I found this to be very effective." - a 12th grade student *Sexual Violence Interactive program using exercises and videos which emphasizes prevention and protection from sexual assault. Program is designed to dispel myths, raise awareness, and challenge students to consider their own attitudes, views, and behaviors surrounding rape and sexual assault. College *Risk Reduction Interactive program using exercises and videos, which emphasizes prevention and protection from sexual assault. Program is designed to dispel myths, raise awareness, and challenge students to consider their own attitudes, views, and behaviors surrounding rape and sexual assault. Responding to Victimization Advanced interactive program targeting student leaders such as peer advisors, residence assistance, and orientation leaders. This program discusses the realities of sexual violence and provides skills to campus leaders on handling disclosures of rape and sexual assault. Safety Rangers Program "My child learned the importance of being safe and how to handle difficult environments." - a parent of a Safety Rangers graduate
The Safety Rangers program is a free, 10-session, after school program in which children learn the skills to protect themselves from abuse and victimization. Throughout the program, participants develop individual safety portfolios. The final product is a hand-made creative compilation of worksheets, games, and art projects reinforcing lessons in safety skills. Some topics include:
